When the singer and pianist Nat King Cole’s 15-minute variety show debuted on NBC in November 1956, he made history as the first Black American to host a television program. But just over the country’s northern border, another Black entertainer had him beat: In the summer of 1955, Eleanor Collins had her own show on the CBC, Canada’s national broadcasting network. Though her show was a landmark in TV history — she was both the first woman and the first Black person to host a program in Canada — her selection was hardly a surprise. By the mid-1950s, Mrs. Collins was already widely regarded as Canada’s “first lady of jazz,” known for her mastery of the standards and her commanding performances on radio, early TV specials and in nightclubs around Vancouver, where she lived.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump and several of his co-defendants in the Georgia election subversion case are appealing a judge’s ruling that let Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis remain on the election subversion case. The defense attorneys on Friday asked the Georgia Court of Appeals to overturn Judge Scott McAfee’s initial decision that allowed Willis and her office continue to pursue the case but only if Nathan Wade, the special prosecutor with whom she had a romantic relationship, resigned. While Wade has since left the case, defense attorneys still want the appellate court to disqualify the entire Fulton County DA’s office. “DA Willis has covered herself and her office in scandal and disrepute, as she has squandered her credibility and repeatedly and flagrantly violated the heightened ethical standards demanded of her position,” the appeal states. However, the judge added, “Georgia law does not permit the finding of an actual conflict for simply making bad choices – even repeatedly.”The district attorney’s office declined to comment.

Marilyn Lands, a Democrat, won a special election Tuesday for a State House seat in Alabama after campaigning on access to abortion and in vitro fertilization, underscoring the continued political potency of reproductive rights. The canary in the coal mine for Republicans on the issue of abortion is becoming a full symphony in this cycle's elections. In a stunning turn, a Democrat handily won an Alabama race in a blowout Tuesday night after campaigning almost entirely on reproductive rights. Marilyn Lands, a licensed mental health counselor, emerged from the special election for a state legislative seat with 62% of the vote, compared with 37% for Republican Teddy Powell. CNN —A majority of Supreme Court justices appeared skeptical Tuesday of the idea of a nationwide ban or new limits on mifepristone, the primary drug used for medication abortions. At issue in the case are lower-court rulings that would have rolled back recent Food and Drug Administration decisions to ease access to the mifepristone. “What the court did … is enter sweeping nationwide relief that restricts access to mifepristone for every single woman in this country. CNN —Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis can stay on and prosecute the Georgia 2020 election interference racketeering case against former President Donald Trump and 14 of his co-defendants, Judge Scott McAfee ruled Friday, but only if she removes the special prosecutor with whom she engaged in a romantic relationship. CNN has reached out to the district attorney’s office regarding the next steps in the case. Wilis chose to dedicate much of her energy on what she believed was the most important case: prosecuting Trump for his attempts to steal the Georgia election in 2020. But the next 40 non-racketeering charges stemmed from roughly a dozen key incidents after the 2020 election. In an emergency request filed Friday afternoon, Navarro asked the court to let him remain free while he challenges the conviction before the federal appeals court in Washington, DC. CNN —The Supreme Court on Friday denied a request by a Texas college student group to host a drag show on campus, siding with the school’s decision to prohibit the performance. Spectrum WT and two student leaders of the LGBTQ group filed an emergency petition with the high court asking that it be allowed to put on the show at West Texas A&M University. The brief order by the Supreme Court on Friday doesn’t resolve the issue but means the group will not be able to put on the performance while the litigation continues. The conservative 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals will hear arguments in the case the week of April 29. “The show,” Morris said, “is not over.”A spokesman for West Texas A&M University declined to comment on the pending litigation.

CNN —Ex-Trump adviser Peter Navarro must report to a federal prison in Miami by March 19 to begin serving a four-month sentence for his contempt of Congress conviction, his attorneys said on Sunday. Navarro has now been ordered to report to the custody of the Bureau of Prisons, FCI Miami, on or before 2:00PM EDT on March 19, 2024,” Navarro’s attorneys said in a court filing, referring to a low-security prison in Florida. Navarro was sentenced earlier this year to four months in prison after being convicted of two contempt of Congress counts. He’s been trying to avoid reporting to prison while his appeal of the conviction plays out, but his efforts have so far failed. US District Judge Amit P. Mehta ordered him last month to report to prison after denying his bid to stay free, and the federal appeals court in Washington, DC, is now considering a similar request.
